#2 My Name is Georgia A Portrait by Jeanette Winter

February 8, 2013

My book I choose this week was about the famous artist Ms. Georgia O'Keeffe illustrated by Jeanette Winter.  This book has a happy mood to it.  It reminded me of  when I was a child and use to look up and stare at the sky and admire the clouds.  I liked the way she showed the beauty of color and symbolism in her illustrations.  This story talks about Georgia as a child and shows her love of nature.  She is especially found of the sky.  She desperately wants to display her ideas as she sees the world  through her eyes, which is BIG! She goes to school and learns different techniques and ends up....well I can't give the ending away.  You will have  to see for yourself and check it out at your local library.  This book celebrates diversity.

  1. This seems like a very interesting book. I think it would be a great book to read to children to encourage them to follow their dreams, just as Georgia did. Looking at the front cover, the pictures seem very detailed and could possible explain the story without the words.

  2. This book was interesting to hear about. It is also nice to know that famous people come from New Mexico too.Activities would be fun with this book by showing the students her artwork, and then letting the kids explore/use their imaginations to create their own artwork. She seems like an inspirational story that give children a way to look at society through their own eyes.

  3. I think this book provides teachers, in New Mexico, a great opportunity to make a cultural reference to something that happened here! It would be fun to have students create their own Georgia O'Keeffe picture.

  4. The illustrations look amazing! I think it is so awesome that you picked this book, it is so important for students to learn about the people who have impacted where they live and to gain knowledge about their culture and what her life was about. A student earlier said that it would be cool to use as a lesson for kids to follow their dreams- such an important lesson to learn!
